  • Camp History

The Howard Payne Band Leadership Camp at Howard Payne University, was started in the summer of 1973. At that time, it was called the Howard Payne Flag Camp.

Over a period of years, it was renamed the "Howard Payne Flag and Drum Major Camp."  As the areas of participation grew, the camp was renamed to be the "Howard Payne Marching Band Camp."  And, within the last few years, the camp has come to include every aspect of the modern band and was renamed the "Howard Payne Band Leadership Camp."

The camp has had 4 directors since its inception: George Strickland, Darrin Jolly, Chuck Christian and Chris Lovejoy.  All of these men have been incredible leaders and visionaries for the camp at HPU. Director of Bands at HPU, Mr. Corey Ash, is the fifth and current director of the camp.

Now in its 45th year, the camp is going stronger than ever and includes tracks for every student as well as three performance ensembles and percussion instruction. Only time will tell what wonderful new innovations can be found at the camp that leads all others!
